Constructed Self Therapy (CST): Rewire Your Brain. Restore Your Body. Reclaim Your Relationships.

An integrative, compassion-led approach that bridges modern neuroscience with deep emotional healing to move you from survival mode into earned security.

The Core Concept: Introducing the CST Model

Have you ever felt like you know intellectually that you are safe, yet your body still panics? Do you find yourself trapped in loops of anxiety, deep-seated shame, or relationship patterns you can’t seem to break?

Traditional therapies often treat these challenges as logical errors in your thinking. Constructed Self Therapy (CST) is different.

Contemporary neuroscience tells us that our brain is a prediction engine. Its primary job is to manage your Body Budget—the physical energy, hormones, and resources required to keep you alive. When you experience past trauma, relational hurts, or boundary violations, your brain builds high-urgency protective habits (internal parts) to keep your budget from crashing.

When you get triggered, you are not failing. Your brain is simply executing an old survival script from its memory library.

We stop fighting your feelings and learn to optimize your body budget, calming your nervous system from the bottom up.

We identify your protective internal parts (the Inner Critic, the People-Pleaser, the Wall) with radical, non-judgmental curiosity.

We use targeted self-compassion as a biological tool to signal absolute safety to your brain, unlocking true neuroplastic change.

We translate internal healing into outward interpersonal mastery, teaching you how to communicate with clear, firm boundaries.

We chose the name Constructed Self Therapy because it puts the architectural power back in your hands. If your past trauma or childhood attachment tracks taught your brain to construct a self-concept rooted in shame, anxiety, or survival walls, it means your brain can learn to reconstruct a new self-concept rooted in absolute safety, high emotional granularity, and secure relational fluency. You aren't broken pieces needing integration; you are an active creator learning to build a resilient life.

What happens in a session

Taking the first step into therapy can feel daunting, especially if your brain is currently predicting vulnerability as a threat or a drain on your energy budget. With Constructed Self Therapy (CST), your initial consultation is completely free from clinical pressure, lecturing, or forced trauma processing.

Our first session is strictly about establishing a safe, collaborative relationship and running your initial Allostatic Map; its about finding out where you are at and where you want to go.

  • The Allostatic Audit: We learn to tune into your raw bodily sensations, separating physical exhaustion from your identity.

  • Concept Deconstruction: We unblend you from overwhelming loops of shame, looking at the protective habits rather than suffering through them.

In individual CST sessions, we don't try to "fix" you, because there are no bad parts of you. Instead, we work through a gentle, systematic 4-step process to safely update your brain's predictive library:

  • The Affective Pause: We introduce deep, somatic self-parenting scripts to co-regulate your nervous system and cut off the cortisol fight-or-flight spike.

  • Fluent Re-Seeding: We give your brain highly granular, precise emotional options, allowing you to walk into the world with a resilient, earned-secure self-concept.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: I’ve tried traditional talk therapy (like CBT) before. How is CST different?

A: Traditional therapy focuses on changing your thoughts; CST focuses on changing your brain’s biological predictions.

Standard Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) assumes your emotional distress is caused by logical errors in your thinking. But if you are a trauma survivor or have attachment wounds, you already know that intellectually realizing you are safe doesn’t stop your heart from racing or your stomach from knotting.

CST recognizes that when your body budget is low, your brain completely bypasses logic to run survival scripts. We don't try to argue with your thoughts while you are in a biological crisis. Instead, we work from the bottom up to stabilize your body budget first, and then from the top down to safely update your brain's predictive library.

Q: Why do you call it the "Constructed Self" instead of the "Integrated Self"?

A: While "integration" is a wonderful concept, modern neuroscience has shown us that the human mind isn't made of permanent, pre-wired boxes or fragments that need to be glued back together. According to the latest brain science, your brain actively constructs your emotions, your reactions, and your sense of self in every single millisecond. It uses your physical body budget and your past memories to guess how to keep you safe.

Q: What exactly is a "Body Budget" and why does it matter for my mental health?

A: Your body budget (scientifically called allostasis) is your brain’s automatic management of your physical energy resources.

Your brain acts like an internal accountant, constantly tracking deposits (sleep, nutrition, safety, self-compassion) and withdrawals (trauma triggers, stress, chronic self-criticism).

When your budget hits a massive deficit, your brain registers this physical exhaustion as an immediate threat to your life. To save energy, it shuts down your creative, rational thinking and automatically deploys your oldest, most extreme childhood defence mechanisms—like panic attacks, emotional numbing, or a desperate urge to run away. By learning to manage your body budget, you stop your brain from sliding into survival mode.

Q: What does it mean when you say "there are no bad parts"?

A: It means that your most frustrating behaviors—like your harsh inner critic, your people-pleasing habits, or your urge to socially withdraw—are actually protective survival mechanisms.

In CST, we integrate the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, which views the mind as a collection of different "parts". We don't view your anxiety, shame, or coping habits as flaws or diseases.

Instead, we recognize them as highly intelligent, childhood-derived algorithms that your brain constructed to keep you safe in an unpredictable world. Healing isn't about cutting out or fighting these "bad" parts; it's about stepping into your core, compassionate Self to parent and reassure these parts so they can finally stand down.

Q: What is "Emotional Granularity" and how does it help me heal from shame?

A: Emotional granularity is the ability to identify and name highly specific, precise emotional states instead of feeling a vague, overwhelming "blob" of distress.

When you experience past relational or spiritual boundary violations, your brain defaults to a blunt, heavy concept like "I am permanently unclean" or "I am totally broken." This causes a massive, prolonged crash in your body budget.

Through CST, we teach you to deconstruct that heavy shame blob into its raw, real ingredients. Instead of concluding "I am ruined," granularity allows you to say: "My heart is racing because I am experiencing a normal wave of relational vulnerability, layered over historical attachment grief, and a low sleep budget." Naming the exact ingredients completely shifts the brain's threat prediction and allows the emotion to safely dissolve.

Q: What are "Fluent Behavioural Modes"?

A: They are the clear, effective, and secure communication tools you use to interact with the world once your internal system feels safe.

Based on the Functional Fluency Model, we categorize human behaviour into energy-draining reactive modes and energy-building fluent modes. When you are stuck in trauma loops, you automatically default to reactive behaviours like Dominating (harshly criticizing yourself or others) or Hiding (shrinking away and putting up avoidant walls).

CST directly translates your inner healing into real-world action by teaching you how to use fluent modes, specifically Structuring (asserting clear, firm, and kind boundaries) and Nurturing (practicing attuned self-care).

Q: Can CST help with childhood and generational trauma?

A: Yes. CST is explicitly designed to heal deep-seated attachment and childhood wounds.

Your brain built its entire predictive concept library based on how your primary caregivers responded to your needs when you were young. If you had to hide your feelings, amplify your distress, or protect yourself from boundary violations, your brain internalized those survival strategies as permanent rules for relationships.

CST helps you achieve what psychologists call "Earned Security." By acting as a secure attachment figure for your own younger, wounded internal parts, you actively provide the safety and validation your nervous system missed out on in childhood, fundamentally rewriting your relational future.
